Maker Faire day two: We did it!

Electric Vehicles | AustinEV | Maker FaireWhen last you left your weary band of AustinEV electric vehicle nuts they were working to do a live motor swap at the Austin Maker Faire. Mark's MR2 had developed a problem with his motor on the way to the Faire on Friday and the decision was made to go ahead and swap out his Kostov with the Advanced DC 9" from Aaron's Kharman Ghia (which is currently being rebuilt).
All went well on day one and the motor/transmission "stack" was resting behind the car awaiting the crew's return on day two of the Austin Maker Faire.
And... I am pleased to report that everything went smoothly. Mark and Christopher got the motor and transmission back in place with little trouble. The half shafts were put back in, the tires were reattached, the controller plate was reassembled and everything was wired up. Good to go.
Maker Faire Day one
Submitted by Aaron Choate on Sat, 2007-10-20 23:56. Electric Vehicles | AustinEV | Maker FaireDay one at the Maker Faire has gone well. The Calcars guys are putting on a good show and drawing crowds to their scheduled talks on the PHEV process.
As it turns out, we are doing a bit of a live EV motor swap demo as well. While we weren't planning on doing more than showing the cars, Mark's MR-2 developed a problem with the motor on the way down to the show. That meant that I got up early Saturday morning to raid the Ghia of its motor so that we could take it to the show for Mark to borrow while he sends his off to be rebuilt. I love the fact that I was able to drop the motor on my own with no lift and no help. I was able to leave the transmission in the car and just pull the motor and adapter plate off. The Ghia/VW ease of engine/motor access is no different with the electric.
