Maker Faire Day one

| |

Day one at the Maker Faire has gone well. The Calcars guys are putting on a good show and drawing crowds to their scheduled talks on the PHEV process.

As it turns out, we are doing a bit of a live EV motor swap demo as well. While we weren't planning on doing more than showing the cars, Mark's MR-2 developed a problem with the motor on the way down to the show. That meant that I got up early Saturday morning to raid the Ghia of its motor so that we could take it to the show for Mark to borrow while he sends his off to be rebuilt. I love the fact that I was able to drop the motor on my own with no lift and no help. I was able to leave the transmission in the car and just pull the motor and adapter plate off. The Ghia/VW ease of engine/motor access is no different with the electric.

We have pulled the MR-2 "stack" (motor and transmission) and switched out the Kostov motor with an Advanced DC 9 inch motor. Lucky for us/Mark the bolt pattern and shaft sizes are the same. Otherwise, this would be nowhere near as easy as it is turning out to be. Now the whole setup is waiting at the rear of the car to be reinstalled in the morning.

All of this is going on as we field questions and show the features of the cars. So, it is going a bit slower than usual. We're having a blast.
